Asteroid
Viking (External Link) 1 and 2 became the first craft to land on the surface of Mars. They were launched in late 1975 primarily to determine if there was life on Mars. While their results were ambiguous, these are exactly the type of craft we need to send to the asteroids. The Viking landers had an arm which could scoop up soil samples and perform several sophisticated analytical experiments.
