The Russian space station, Mir, has been in orbit and permanently manned for over a decade. It is a shining example of simple technology pushed to it's limit, and I think that we can learn a lot from their experience. Mir has proven, in majestic fashion, that you do not have to use "cutting edge" technology in space. Granted, there are much better ways to do many things now than when Mir was first conceived (by Konstantine Tsiolkovsky in the 1880's), but the point is that this system has kept people alive for over a decade in space(with a lot of support from the planet below) and has provided scientists from all over the world with a wealth of data about the environment in space.
