High Powered Amateur Rocketry

"High Powered" rocketry involves much larger rockets and engines. Where "model rockets" use engines in classes A through D, "high powered" rockets use solid propellant engines of similar chemical composition, but in classes F through M (or even O!). Remember that each letter class has twice the specific impulse of the letter before it. If you have ever seen a "D" engine launched and thought that it was impressive, an "F" engine is twice that, and a G twice the impulse of the F(!). They regularly achieve altitudes of 2,000 to 10,000 feet! These engines require that you be 18 years old to purchase one, and that you be certified through Tripoli High Powered Rocketry Association or the National Association of Rocketry (NAR). In addition, FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) flight clearance is required prior to launching anything weighing one pound or more. You should contact either of the above rocketry organizations for information about the nearest chapter to you. These clubs find the required large launch areas and secure blanket FAA clearance for a day or a weekend. By attending their meetings, you will be able to talk with and learn from others some of the finer points of the hobby, but let's explore it a bit more here...
