How to Colonize an Asteroid
This technique uses the gravity well of a nearby planet or moon to accelerate the spacecraft and sling it off at another angle. NASA has used this technique to great effect when congressional budget cuts drained probes of their fuel, and even by design a few times. Gravity assist can be used in combination with solar sails, ion propulsion systems, or even chemical rockets.
