The Gemini space craft was a two man craft, first launched by NASA in April of 1964. There were a total of 10 manned Gemini missions ending in November of 1966. One of these missions was the first US Space walk, by Ed White, in June of 1965. Other missions were some of the first experiments with docking to another spacecraft in orbit, using the Agena Target Vehicle.
Gemini used an open ended life support system. All of their needs were carried with them in cans or bottles, and they did not have the ability to recycle any aspect of their environment. This type of life support system is only capable of operating for a couple of weeks without running out of air and water.
