one is a new technology testbed for NASA. It is relatively small in
size, and therefore did not cost too much to launch, but it carries a variety
of new technologies - the most important of which is the ion propulsion system
which got it up to incredible speeds on it's way into the solar system. The
engines proven on this flight will be those which we will use on our
colony ship.
Deep Space One was the first craft from earth to be launched with an ion propulsion system on October 24, 1998. .
