HAM, or amateur, radio operators have historically been at the forefront of radio and communications science, and have been instrumental in demonstrating the ability of mere mortals, like you and I , to construct and fly functional spacecraft.
It is possible for the average mortal to construct some truely impressive radio equipment, as illustrated by the picture of my friend Steves' hundred foot tower to the right. Granted, it was expensive, but it cost no more than a power boat or an RV. It is within your ability to carry out projects of this magnitude in your own back yard. Steves' tower is proof that we can colonize an asteroid NOW!
You do need a licence to pursue this hobby, but that is because it is potentially dangerous and harmful to other people. The licence is intended to ensure that you have enough knowledge about the subject to be safe and not hurt anyone else.
