There are many CAD (Computer Assisted Drafting) programs available on the commercial market which are specifically tailored toward the design of printed circuit boards. Most of them are very expensive, but I use an inexpensive (under $100.00) program called "PC Trace" from Poulsen's Technical Consultants, 2800 S. 72nd St. #110, Lincoln, NE 68506.
PC Trace is designed for the experimenter making fairly small boards, but it has many of the features of some of the really expensive programs, including an auto - router for laying out the traces. Click the link above to go to their web site.
