How to Colonize an Asteroid
While this battery is horribly inefficient and of poor quality, it does serve to illustrate the principles very well. Here are a few things you can do with your battery;
You can recharge the battery when it goes dead by dumping out the vinegar
solution and refilling the jars.
You could build more of these batteries and wire them in series for more
voltage, or in parallel for more current.
Try
to design a simple solar cell charger for the battery - you would only need
a few solar cells to generate two and a half volts. Use a blocking diode
so that the battery does not discharge through the solar cells when it is
dark. (See the Radio System in the Shed).
Redesign the battery with larger plates for more current.
Redesign the battery with more cells for greater voltage.
Come up with a better electrolyte. WARNING: DO NOT USE
STRONG ACID IN THIS DEVICE - YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO KEEP FROM SPLASHING IT
ON YOURSELF, AND YOU WILL DESTROY THE ELECTRODES.
Find metals which work better as electrodes.
