Home-Made Battery: Assemble the Base

Centering RailsStart your assembly by nailing the centering rails to the 2 X 4 base so that they will keep the jars from moving from side to side. Before nailing them in place, check to be sure that they are far enough apart to allow the jars to fit comfortably. Click the image to the left for a larger view of the centering rails. Don't nail the strips down with your test-fit jars in place! Use them only to check the spacing. If you look closely, I had to let the rear rail overhang the edge of the 2 X 4. Make sure that the center of the jars sit as close to the center line of the base as is possible.

Nail the plywood end supports to the ends of the plywood base, as shown in the picture in the upper right.

This completes assembly of the wooden base for the battery.
