How to Colonize an Asteroid
It is imperative to set up a permanent power generation facility on the surface of the asteroid as soon as possible. Electrical and direct thermal power will basically be the only thing supplied to us by our environment when we first arrive, and in order for a few people to accomplish the required amount of work, we'll need lots of POWER.
This first power facility should be located near where the colony ship modules will be buried - at least half a mile from where the secondary shaft will be cut - and should be considered a permanent installation. The secondary shaft end will probably be where the docking facilities will be, and when these quarters are finally abandoned they can be used for offices and repair facilities. It won't work too well several years later when we start the asteroid rotating, but it will act as an emergency backup system and we might be able to direct mirrors at it from orbit.
