How to Colonize an Asteroid

Specific Asteroids

Please Note: The images on this page and the few following were supplied by NASA. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by NASA in any way.

The normal view of an asteroid from earth is usually a dim streak on a photographic plate, or simply a dot which changes position over time, but there are other ways to get a view. There have been a couple of opportunities for space craft bound for the outer planets to take pictures of asteroids as they flew by, and on Valentines day (February 14th) 2000, the NEAR probe made it into orbit around the asteroid Eros. If an asteroid passes close enough to earth, it is also possible to get an image of the surface by bouncing radio waves off the object and imaging the reflections which come back to earth.
