a temporary Habitat on the Asteroid
Upon arrival at the selected asteroid, the first thing that must be done is to construct temporary dwelling space under the surface of the asteroid. Portions of the colony ship must be burried so that the rocky material of the asteroid (metallic in many cases) can provide maximum protection from solar and cosmic radiation.
This dwelling space needs to be a few feet under the surface, and it must be constructed with great care, as it will be home to the colonists for a few years, at least. Later, when the colonists have moved farther into the interior of the asteroid, this temporary dwelling space could be used for repair shops and communications centers for other space craft on various missions through the solar system.
While these dwellings are being constructed, the colonists will need to erect large solar power arrays to provide power for both the dwellings and for the massive mining operations which will soon commence.
